MEMO™: Managing Emotions, Maintaining Optimism

Are you dealing with:

  • Overwhelming feelings of sadness or loneliness
    making each day a struggle.
  • Ruminating thoughts that keep you from sleeping
    or focusing during the day.
  • Feelings of worthlessness.
  • Inability to control negative thoughts that take you over one moment
feeling good and then suddenly feeling yourself plummet.
  • Being stuck in the same destructive patterns.

Did you get the MEMO™ growing up?  Our parents showed us the way in dealing with our thoughts and emotions. They provided the model through their words and actions.  Think back to what your parents did when they were stressed out. Did they fly off the handle and run out the door in a rage, then return hours later and everything seemed to be fine? What did they do when they were gone? How did they work through the difficult moment? What were their coping skills?  As the saying goes, we only know what we know.  If we didn't have a good example, it may take us years to figure out the right path in dealing with daily events, relationships, set backs and life in general.

It is not too late to make changes to better your life.

Depression, anxiety and low self–esteem are issues that coexist creating a difficult cycle for many.  MEMO™ provides you with concrete tools to help you deal with these issues.  MEMO™ teaches you how to manage the emotional roller coaster and provides you with resiliency tools. MEMO™ looks at the relationship between anxiety, depression and self–esteem issues. This program pulls apart and breaks down symptoms one by one. It facilitates the discovery process to identify the sources of these symptoms. We don't all have a great support system and sometimes seeing a counselor once a week may not be enough when you are so far down that you can't pick yourself back up. MEMO™ provides additional support and guidance throughout the week via emails. These emails are tailored to each client’s needs with their specific goals in mind.  Clients have found that this is key to create positive reinforcement that enables them to stay focused and on–track to recovery. Dealing with depression, anxiety and/or low self–esteem can be debilitating. There is no reason to face this alone.

MEMO™ is based on an approach used to help individuals with depression. Zindel V. Segal, J. Mark G. Williams, and John D. Teasdale wrote Mindfulness–Based Cognitive Therapy For Depression. This approach integrates cognitive therapy principles and practice into a mindfulness framework. Susan has found this method to be helpful not only with depression but clients showing symptoms of anxiety and low self–esteem. The mindfulness piece of this approach enables clients to see the path of their thoughts and feelings and the influence they have on their mental state.

“Family Life is our first school of emotional learning; in this intimate cauldron we learn how to feel about ourselves and how others will react to our feelings; how to think about these feelings and what choices we have in reacting; how to read and express hopes and fears.

This emotional schooling operates not just through the things that parents say and do directly to children, but also in the models they offer for handling their own feelings and those that pass between husband and wife.  Some parents are gifted emotional teachers, others atrocious.”
